SKYRIDE Leicester

in

Skyride is coming to Leicester this summer for the second year running. It takes place on Sunday 29th August 2010. The ride is a fantastic event and it gives thousands of cyclists the opportunity to enjoy traffic free streets for a day and have a cycling adventure in the city.

Thousands of cyclists will rediscover the freedom of their bikes, and see and experience the city with family and friends from a completely different perspective.

Along the route will be entertainment, music, sporting challenges, cycling tips, picnic areas and food markets. It promises to be an amazing day out. Last year over 8,000 cyclists lined the route and this year promises to be even bigger and busier.

Volunteering at Skyride

Skyride needs your help to make the day a success. Over a hundred volunteers are needed to help things run smoothly from start to finish.  Support is needed at all stages, from helping to get set up first thing in the morning, to the last tidy up of the day. Volunteering at Skyride is a great chance to be a part of an absolutely fantastic day. It's a chance to support our city and give something back to the community There are a large number of volunteer roles available so there should be something to suit everybody.

What skills do I need?

No particular skills are needed. We will match you to the right role for you. If you would like a relaxed role you could help out with refreshments or registration. If you are active and a keen cyclist you could be a troubleshooter zooming around the city in response. If you have local knowledge you could help out marshalling in your area, or perhaps you speak additional languages then you could help in areas where your language skills would be a help.

Volunteers will be offered either a morning or afternoon role so if you would like to cycle yourself, you will have plenty of time. You can also volunteer for the entire day from 9 to 5 if you like!

Every volunteer will receive pre event training and there is a possibility that volunteers who sign up early will be eligible for cycle training.

Volunteer Roles

Activation Volunteers

Volunteers are needed to support the meeting points and hubs around the city and county, and the various stopping points along the route. The role may involve any of the following tasks: setting up the hub:  helping riders with directions, offering encouragement and advice; helping with entertainment and refreshments etc. The Hubs will be bases at Braunstone, Crown Hills, Glen Parva and Watermead Park

Route Stewards

Volunteer stewards will act as guides along the route, ensuring that riders follow the correct route, offer support on directions and location of entertainment and refreshments, assist with traffic control and other tasks.

Event Support

On bike support volunteers will act as the messaging system along all areas of the route. Volunteers on their bikes will be sent wherever they are needed during the day. Event support will be based in the city centre but you will be moving around the city wherever support is needed This will be a great role where you will be right in the thick of the action. You could be transporting race information, bringing lunches to the volunteer, escorting VIPs, checking on marshals around the city and a variety of other tasks. If you want an actual volunteering experience, this is the one for you.

Cycling skills and confidence on a bike will be vital for this role.
